Boston Marathon 2013
Bombing Photos
This gallery contains original photos I took immediately following both bomb explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line. These photos were taken from my vantage point outside of the Boylston Street Firehouse. at the corner of Hereford and Boylston, using an 18-200mm zoom lens. I was approximately a third of a mile from the finish line, well away from any physical danger, but with a direct line of sight from the view through my camera lens this tragic event appeared as though it was unfolding right in front of me.
I felt the percussion of both blasts, and witnessed the flame burst of the second, snapping the shutter only a moment following. I was as shocked, terrified, and confused as anyone else who was there that day, and am still amazed myself that I was able to capture these shots with any clarity. Though I've posted these photos as an addition to the record of events that occurred that day, I have not forgotten that beyond what can be seen in these images was a tragic reality of pain and death.
Please remember those who were injured or lost in these cowardly, senseless acts of terrorism, and honor all of the emergency and law enforcement personnel, as well as the average citizens who provided aid and support to the injured and the community.
Posted in another separate gallery are photos from weekend and marathon events I participated in with the credit union-sponsored "Kids at Heart" Boston Children's Hospital team, which was the reason I was actually there doing photography. My best friend was a charity runner for the team, and I had the privilege of spending the day with the patient-partners and their families, sharing their excitement, laughter, and fun, and capturing some visual memories for them. These were the beautiful, happy hours that filled the day before the tragedy, and these are moments that also deserve to be remembered.
Please feel free to browse through that gallery also, so you can share in those cherished moments with us.
