Images of the beautiful transformation of a large, bright moon halo into a colorful moon corona following a light winter snow shower. (31Jan10, between 1:15-1:50 a.m.)

These are single images shot WITHOUT the aid of a tripod -- as time was of the essence, shot at very high ISOs, and NOT long exposures because they were achieved hand-held. Some shots aren't 'perfect' from a purest perspective, but I left them in because of the colors or phase of change that were beautifully visible. None of the images in this area of the gallery were retouched in any way, they appear completely "as-shot".

I hope you enjoy viewing these as much as I loved taking them. It was TOTALLY worth standing outside in the crisp quiet of approximately 10-degree air for, alone, for a half-hour in my sweats, warm down coat, and the nearest slip-on shoes I could grab, in six inches of freshly fallen snow, until my fingers were so cold I couldn't feel the buttons on my camera anymore! Yes, REALLY!!

I waited a lifetime to be in the right place at the right time -- with a camera readily available -- to capture this phenomenon for myself. I was totally humbled and grateful that The Creator allowed me this awe-inspiring opportunity. What a spectacular and TOTALLY unexpected sight it was!! I don't think I ever ran so fast to grab my camera before!

See, I went outside with a ruler just to measure the snowfall before turning in for the night. And then I looked up...

Artistic enhancements of some images will appear in a separate gallery very soon!
