The scenes contained in this gallery are not as much intended to be "artistic" as they are just a record of a trek my husband, Herb, and I took in October 2009, during our 10th anniversary trip, to the stunningly beautiful and surreal landmark in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness area of Arizona called:
"The Wave" - also know as North Coyote Buttes.
Since there is really no "officially' marked trail -- which could allow one to get SERIOUSLY lost in the middle of the desert -- I decided to expand on the brief pictorial guide sheet provided by the BLM office, and created my own landmark-views throughout our entire traverse. I took mostly quick, one-off shots in front of and behind us, as well as some side views and close-up shots of interesting and beautiful details discovered along the way.
We figured that IF they were needed our pictures could help guide us back out. As it turned out, though, if one just looked for and followed the cairns (small human-stacked piles of rocks used as markers -- look for them in the photos) positioned all along the way, one should be able to make it to and from this destination safely, and successfully.
I also feel a very real need to note that despite what some may say about the desert, it is NOT "a desolate" or "dead" place. It is a truly beautiful and remarkable place with its own life and its own personality. And as I will always preach, even if just to the choir, I believe that all one needs to do is take the time LOOK, and make the effort to SEE to find the bountiful treasures waiting in the details.
This gallery follows our journey to and concludes at what we called 'the gateway' to "The Wave." Our adventure then continues on in the next gallery: "The Wave - North Coyote Buttes." Be sure to check it out!! I don't think you'll be disappointed. =o)
Words to the Wise, if you, yourself, decide to brave this trek sometime in the future: WATER, food, appropriate seasonal clothing and hiking footwear -- and be prepared to hike UPHILL in LOTS of SAND! The trail itself is really not that difficult, however, hiking in this talcum-fine sand is pretty strenuous, so just be forewarned. ...Oh, and did I mention WATER?!?
No matter what the conditions of this trail may be, just to be blessed with one of the 20 daily lottery permits, and to have the privilege of experiencing "The Wave" first-hand makes it WELL WORTH THE EFFORT!!
...Oh yeah, and in case I forgot to mention it:
